Information About the Program

The Bachelor’s degree program in Molecular Biology (Version 2024) is an open-admission degree program that begins each winter semester and spans six semesters. It is scientifically oriented, provides a foundational education in biology and the natural sciences, and is a further development of the previous Bachelor’s degree program in Molecular Biology. Molecular and functional aspects of the life sciences are at the heart of this modern degree program, which is characterized by a high proportion of laboratory practicals.

The Molecular Biology (Version 2024) degree program replaces the previous Molecular Biology degree program. It remains suitable for students primarily interested in classical organism-based biology.

The degree program focuses on a broad foundation of knowledge in the areas of study of botany, zoology, ecology/biodiversity, genetics/human genetics, animal and plant physiology, biotechnology/microbiology, neurobiology, bioinformatics, and cell biology, as well as the fundamentals of chemistry, physics, Computer Science, and mathematics/biostatistics. This broad foundation serves as the basis for admission to our English-language master’s program in Biology, which offers four areas of specialization.

Key Information on the Program

The first four semesters, comprising 17 foundational modules—each consisting of lectures and laboratory courses (and exercises, where applicable)—constitute the foundational phase of the program. In the third year of study, biological expertise is deepened in one or two areas of study through two advanced laboratory courses with seminars and two modules with theoretical sessions. The field or laboratory internship, as well as the elective non-biological subject, serve to orient students toward and broaden their career prospects. At the end of the program, students complete a 9-week laboratory internship culminating in a written final thesis—the bachelor’s thesis.
