Information on the content
The Bachelor's degree program in Molecular Biology (version 2024) is an admission-free degree programme that starts in the winter semester and lasts six semesters. It is scientifically oriented, provides a basic education in biology and natural sciences and is the further development of the previous Bachelor's degree course in Molecular Biology. Molecular and functional aspects of the life sciences are the focus of this modern degree programme, which is characterized by a high proportion of laboratory practicals.
The Molecular Biology degree programme (version 2024) replaces the previous Molecular Biology degree programme. It is still suitable for students who are primarily interested in classical organisms.
The degree programme focuses on a broad basic knowledge in the areas of study of botany, zoology, ecology/biodiversity, genetics/human genetics, animal and plant physiology, biotechnology/microbiology, neurobiology, bioinformatics and cell biology as well as the basics in the subjects of chemistry, physics, computer science and mathematics/biostatistics. The broad basic knowledge serves as a basis for entering our English-language Master's degree program in Biology with its four specializations.
Key data on the course
The first four semesters with 17 basic modules, each consisting of lectures and practicals (or exercises), form the foundation course. In the third year of study, students deepen their biological knowledge in one or two biological areas of study in two advanced internships with seminars and two modules with theory courses. The company or laboratory internship as well as the freely selectable non-biological subject serve to orient and expand the professional field. At the end of the course, students complete a 9-week laboratory work placement with a written thesis - the Bachelor's thesis.
