INVITATION TO COLLABORATE ON MAPPING FOR THE OTTER PROJECT

Dear students,

The "Otterland Rheinland-Pfalz" project of the Stiftung Natur und Umwelt RLP (SNU) was successfully launched at the beginning of 2024. In the last winter season, we were able to carry out the first mapping - in the coming 2025/2026 season, we would now like to expand our network and once again involve students who are interested in practical nature conservation work.

The otter project

The otter project aims to promote the natural reintroduction of otters in Rhineland-Palatinate. Our project area covers the whole of Rhineland-Palatinate. The mapping includes transverse structures (QBW), potential otter habitats and natural otter evidence. QBW, such as weirs and bridges, can represent migration barriers for otters and other species and fragment their habitats. It is therefore important to record these structures in order to create a data basis for potential future measures. Mapping is a crucial step towards improving the permeability of watercourses for many species and thus increasing and connecting their habitats.

What do WE offer?

We are looking for committed people who would like to take part in data collection on a permanent basis or just for one season. All volunteers receive a free one-day training course - with an introduction to otter biology and the survey methods. The data is collected via an app, so a smartphone is required. An expense allowance is paid. Having your own car is an advantage, but not essential. We would therefore like to cordially invite you to support us in these important mapping activities. Participation would make a significant contribution and would of course be remunerated.

Why take part?

Participation offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in nature conservation and ecological field work - a valuable addition to your studies and CV.

If you have any questions or are interested, please contact me directly by mid-August 2025.

We look forward to receiving lots of motivated feedback!

With kind regards
