Hello, dear freshmen!
For you, starting college means the beginning of a new chapter in your life.
To make sure this goes as smoothly as possible and so you can get to know your fellow students quickly, we’ve planned a few events for the first few weeks. We hope many of you will attend, and we wish you success and lots of fun during your studies. If you’d like to get familiar with the university’s infrastructure in advance, you can find the introduction to the online systems here! But don’t worry if things don’t go smoothly right away—we’ve planned an information session where we’ll be happy to help you with any issues you may have!

Before the semester begins, there will be a math prep course to ensure all students are on the same page; you can register for it here!

Events

Oct. 1

Freshman Breakfast and Welcome from the Student Council

On Oct. 1, we—the Student Council— will welcome you starting at 7:40 a.m. in Building 13, Room 322. There, we’ll briefly introduce ourselves and provide you with some important initial information to help you successfully participate in the freshman events and get off to a good start in your daily university life.

The event will be accompanied by a cozy vegan and vegetarian breakfast. We’ll have a variety of drinks, rolls, and a selection of spreads and other snacks available, so there’s something for everyone.

Afterward, we’ll accompany you to the math prep course, which starts right after!

Information Session

In the afternoon, we’ll answer all your questions at an information session. We’ll also give you tips for getting started with your studies and a detailed introduction to the university’s online services, such as QIS, KIS, etc. The event will take place at 2:00 p.m. in Building 13, Room 322.

Oct. 2

Campus Rally

On October 2, starting at 1:00 p.m., we invite you to this year’s campus rally. During a short tour of the campus, you’ll get to know the university grounds and complete a variety of tasks at different stations.

The meeting point is the parking lot in front of Building 13. There, you’ll be divided into small groups and start the rally together. The event lasts about two hours.

Oct. 5

Humberg Tower Hike

On October 5, we’ll take you on a beer hike to the Humberg Tower. We’ll meet at 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot in front of Building 13. There, you’ll get plenty of beer and non-alcoholic drinks for the hike, so be sure to bring a backpack big enough to carry as much as you want to drink! Along the way, we’ll play some fun games, and in the evening we’ll walk back to campus together. There, we’ll wrap up the day with more drinks.

Chill & Grill

Following the Humberg Tower hike on October 5, we’ll wrap up the day starting around 5:00 p.m. with a Chill & Grill get-together featuring good music. Even if you’re not joining the hike, you’re welcome to come straight to the event. Just bring whatever you’d like to grill—we’ll provide the grills. Of course, there will be a separate grill for vegetarian and vegan options. Take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere to get to know your fellow students and enjoy a wonderful evening together!

Oct. 7 & Oct. 14

Game Afternoon

On October7 and 14, we cordially invite you to our game afternoons. They start at 1:00 p.m. each day.

The meeting locations are:

• on October 7 in Building 13, Rooms 360 and 370
• on October 14 in Building 46, Room 225

Cool games like Charades, Codenames, and Werewolf, as well as various fun mini-games, are waiting for you. You can play in both small and large groups and get to know your fellow students better. Of course, drinks and snacks will be provided!

October 9

Bar Crawl

On October 9 at 7:00 p.m., we’ll meet at Schillerplatz and set off in small groups through downtown Lautern. We’ll show you some of the city’s most popular bars—and along the way, you’ll get to know us and your fellow students in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to make your first connections and maybe even find your future study group (or your next pub buddy).

And don’t worry: You don’t have to drink beer to have fun! Of course, every bar also offers non-alcoholic drinks.

At the end, all the groups will meet up again at a central location to wrap up the evening together. (We’ll let you know which one it’ll be in plenty of time.)

Oct. 12

Information Session on the Programming Course

On Oct. 12 at 2:00 p.m. in Building 24, Room 102, there will be an information session for the programming course “Introduction to Programming for Biologists.” In a relaxed setting, we’ll show you what to expect in the course and help you overcome any initial apprehensions about programming. Together, we’ll set up the necessary programming environment, try out some first small steps, and give you helpful tips to get started. No prior knowledge is required—just bring your laptop!

Information Session for Teacher Education Students

On October 12 at 2:00 p.m. in Building 13, Room 360, there will be an information session for all teacher education students. Together, we’ll look at your class schedules and help you plan your first semester. Of course, there will also be time for your questions about starting your studies and the teacher education program.

October 16–18

Freshman Weekend

From Friday, October 16, through Sunday, October 18, we cordially invite you to our Freshman Weekend! You can look forward to a varied program with plenty of activities, including a pub quiz, swing golf, a mini-Olympics, karaoke, and much more. The weekend kicks off on campus; we’ll meet on Friday at 5:00 p.m. in Building 13. There will also be the option to stay overnight on campus so you can enjoy the entire weekend together.

More details about the individual events and locations will follow in the coming days.

Oct. 19

Professors’ Café

On October 19, following the kickoff event, the Professors’ Café will take place at approximately 3:00 p.m. in Building 13, Room 360. Here, you’ll have the chance to meet some of the faculty members from the Department of Biology even before your studies begin. The student council will provide coffee and cake—including vegan options, of course. The get-together will take place in small groups, allowing everyone to get to know one another in a relaxed atmosphere.
