The Quantitative Cell Biology group (PI—Yury Bykov) was established within the Department of Cell Biology. We use high-throughput genetics, imaging, and biochemical approaches to understand how each protein finds its correct location in the cell and what happens when things go wrong. To do this, we use one of the simplest and most extensively studied organisms—budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). We know so much about it and can manipulate its genome so easily that it serves as an ideal living laboratory for testing our ideas about the most fundamental aspects of cellular function.
Our main goal is to understand how cells maintain a highly ordered environment to perform their most important functions. We strive to study as many aspects as possible in intact cells without disrupting the intricately organized cellular structure. We always welcome creative and curious students to join the group for their lab work or bachelor’s/master’s thesis projects. Learn more about our research and teaching activities! If you’re interested in joining the team, contact Yury (yury.bykov [at] rptu.de).
