Environmental chemicals, as synthetic molecules, ubiquitously occur in today's ecosystems and the question as to whether they create negative effects on biological systems is key for their assessment and management. Agricultural pesticides as biologically active molecules actively introduced to the environment play a key role, and elaborated procedures have been established to prospectively evaluate their risks. Both, the exposure, i.e., the presence of pesticides in environmental matrices, and the effects on biota at different levels of complexity (subcellular, individual, population, community, ecosystem) are important aspects of this risk assessment. The present talk retrospectively reflects on our knowledge on exposure and effects and, while doing so, takes the audience on a path from small site-scale case studies via national and global scale meta-analyses to future AI-based evaluations of the biological effects of environmental chemicals.
