WS1: Discover the world of microorganisms
Microorganisms are the smallest living organisms and colonize almost every habitat on our planet. Their diversity is enormous and their contribution to the material cycles in nature is essential. Without bacteria, our environment would not look the way we know it. In microbiology, we are concerned with understanding the various services provided by bacteria. We work with molecular methods, i.e. we examine the molecules of the cells. This includes the genetic material, enzymes, metabolic products and structures of the cells. In this workshop, you can observe and microscope various bacteria in the microbe zoo. At our experimental stations, they can get active themselves, e.g. by isolating DNA from bacteria and analyzing it using electrophoresis. In a toxicity test, they can investigate the effect of various substances on the survival of bacteria. But bacteria also have enemies. Follow how viruses infect bacterial cells and reprogram the cells to multiply themselves. Finally, there is the opportunity to take part in a tour of the research laboratories.
