WS3: Glowing Insights: The fascination of fluorescent proteins - A journey from the depths of the Pacific to the laboratory
The use of fluorescent proteins has revolutionized research in biology. A Nobel Prize was even awarded for the discovery. This course presents the importance of fluorescent samples in practical experiments. The course consists of two parts. In a practical part (approx. 70-80 min), participants will have the opportunity to purify GFP, for which basic techniques such as pipetting, centrifugation and the use of UV light will be practiced by each person. In an accompanying seminar, we will briefly discuss what GFP is used for in biology and medicine, what adaptations have been made to improve the jellyfish protein and where else fluorescent molecules are used in our everyday lives.
