Engineering Chlamydomonas for Biopharmaceutical Production

The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is a worldwide student initiative in synthetic biology, where teams design innovative projects addressing global challenges in medicine, environment, and biotechnology. Each year, hundreds of teams present their research at the Grand Jamboree in Paris, creating a unique platform for scientific creativity and collaboration.

Our project focuses on the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a sustainable host for biopharmaceutical production. We aim to produce single-chain variable fragments (scFv) of Cetuximab, a therapeutic antibody used in colorectal cancer treatment, demonstrating the potential of Chlamydomonas as future platforms for accessible and sustainable cancer therapeutics.
