On the Study of Chloroplast Ion Homeostasis and new Research Directions inspired by it
10 years ago, we discovered the first K+ transporter in the chloroplast of the model plant Arabidopsis. Since then, we have worked towards understanding the physiological relevance of other alkali and alkaline earth metals and their transport proteins. Recently, we have expanded our interest towards transitions metal such as iron. Although, iron’s importance in plants has been researched for decades, our newest data indicate that we are only at the beginning of a systematic perspective when it come to the organellar level.
In my talk, I will provide two in-depth examples about how an understanding of chloroplast ion homeostasis provides new avenue towards more stress-tolerant plants with higher nutrient content.
